Moving to Smith Mountain Lake

After spending most of the last decade in Los Angeles, Emily and I are finally moving back to the East Coast! We recently bought a house on Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke, Virginia and will be moving there full time at some point this winter.

We just got back from a weeklong trip to prepare the house for our move. As is tradition, we started our first night in the house with some local pizza and beer, but we also got to spend the first morning there on the dock enjoying some tea and homemade pumpkin bread!

There were some fun surprises along the way. The previous owners were homebrewers and supporters of the local brewery, Sunken City. They left us with a few cases of steam beer, along with a hop plant on the side of the house!

We wanted to make sure we were happy with our bedroom and closet before moving so that we wouldn’t need to clear out the rooms in the future to clean or paint. Luckily, Emily’s mom was able to join us for most of the week! Together we managed to clean out most of the evidence that a cat used to live in the house while also painting three rooms.

While the weather was great at the beginning of the week (we were able to borrow Emily’s Aunt and Uncle’s kayaks and go on a few short trips!) it rained very heavily in the middle of the week. Unfortunately, the lake flooded for the second time this year and our dock wound up almost two feet underwater! We are fortunate that we didn’t have anything in the dock house to get ruined, but most people on the lake were not that lucky.

Overall we are super excited about moving to the lake. Between morning kayak trips, afternoon projects, and evening games we will be very busy! When the weather gets warmer in the summer and swimming in the lake sounds refreshing we hope to get plenty of visits from friends and family.
